Brownout Memories

Every time I tell the Husband some of my memories, he tells me to blog about it which I often forget. Well, I realized that I should do so that when I’m old and gray, I have something to read. I plan to write it down in my journal as well. Since the Philippines are experiencing a series of brownouts right now, it is but appropriate to tell you my memory of brownouts.

It is not unusual to have power interruptions where I used to live especially when its stormy. Some areas can get flooded, power is turned off so people won’t get electricuted (well at least, that’s the reason we get from the power company). In that note, I just want to include that water supply can be limited to some areas as well. That is the reason why we always keep extra water on stainless steel drums at my parent’s house. Life at home is not that bad when you get used to it. ;)

Anyway, continuing with my story, I often say that the line, “Light travels faster than sound” is quite true during brownouts. When power goes off, it catches us off guard and you can hear everybody’s sigh of resignation. I swear this is true. But when power goes back on,you will hear people shouting for joy soon after. That’s why I say light indeed travels faster than sound. Haha.

During brownouts, we find ways in entertaining ourselves. The neighbor will be playing piano while I on the other hand will be reading short stories right in front of the lighted candle. In the city, me and my cousins group together and talk about anything under the sun during power outages. Dinner also seems special as our family interact more during brownouts. There are no radios or TV to distract us.

Though I get irritated about missing an episode of my favorite tv series, or when it gets too hot to sleep, I treasure my brownout memories. Talk about seeing things in a different light (yes, pun intended). :)
