Flower Crochet

This is not exactly a crochet kinda of weather.  In fact, this is normally the time to put away winter stuff which includes crocheted beanies and gloves.  However, I got so inspired to make a crocheted headband after watching “My Princess.”  If you don’t know what I’m referring to, it was the one that actress, Kim Tae Hee was wearing.

Now, it has been months since my last crochet project.  To be honest, I have forgotten the different crochet stiches.  Thank goodness I kept the basic crochet guide that was given to me.  After a few practice, I was able to follow the flower pattern. In less than 30 minutes, I was done with it.  All I need to do now is to stick it to a headband.  I will post a picture of the project tomorrow because right now I’m all snuggled in bed. ;)

Speaking of flowers, my garden is doing so well.  I know see some crops have started flowering.  Everything still looks healthy.  My only problem now are the bunnies that roam at night.  I saw one of them staring intently in my garden the previous day.  I might need to put a Rabbit and Deer Scram  to protect the vegetables from being eaten.  I just don’t want to waste all the hardwork I put into it.

Happy List

I haven’t made one in long time and since I’m having a blah kinda mood lately, this is a perfect opportunity to remind myself that things are doing well and there is so much to be grateful for.  So without further ado, here’s my recent happy list:

  • First harvest from my garden
Its not actually a real harvest since the veggies are just by-products from thinning some crops but nevertheless I was able to use them in one of our meals.
  • The Husband’s birthday
I’m grateful to have him as my husband and that won’t be possible without him being born into this world.

  • Able to work out bit by bit
Long walks around the neighborhood and dancing with Zumba videos are currently my workout.  They both leave me panting which means I have to do it more frequently.  The sweat is my reward and of course a tall glass of water and a warm shower!
  • Baby bluebirds in our birdhouses
Every Spring, I wait for this moment.  This year, they are back again with new feathered babies.  Now, we have another batch hatching from a second birdhouse that has been unused for years.  Oh, I love those little tweethearts!

Hunger Games Movie

We finally get to watch the movie version of Hunger Games.  I read all three books so I was quite excited to watch the movie.  I even braided my hair a la Katniss Everdeen.  Since it’s a Friday, we opted for an earlier show time to avoid the crowd.  That is also one of the reason why we never watch a movie the same week it will be released.

As far as the movie itself goes, I guess it’s just a so-so for me.  As one of the people who read the book before watching the movie, I have a tendency to compare them.  There were several differences like how she got the mockingjay pin, Peeta didn’t loose his leg etc.  Some I’m willing to forgo but the source of the mockingjay pin is significant.  I know I am starting to sound like one of those snotty readers who can’t be pleased with the movie version.  LOL.

One other thing that I did not like is that how the camera keeps on moving like its a reality show camera.  I don’t like it in when it is done in TV series and much worse in movies.  Also, all throughout the movie, I feel the relationships were not properly established.  I did not feel any chemistry between Katniss and Peeta.  I also didn’t feel her closeness to Rue.  To me,  it was like in a fast forward motion that these relationships looked forced.  Maybe the director didn’t have enough time to work on it but then again in the animation, Up!, the first part of the movie already made me feel the connection between the old couple in just a couple of minutes.  I don’t know, maybe its just me because I heard several sniffles in the theater when (WARNING:  SPOILER ALERT) Rue died.  As far as the casting goes, I think Liam Hemsworth did well as Gale and Josh Hutcherson is exactly how I imagined Peeta will look like.  As far as Jennifer Lawrence, I wish she was given more lines in the cave scene.  I was disappointed that it was not given importance because that scene is very significant in the book.

mockingjay

My mockingjay pin.  Did I get it from the Hob or did Madge give it to me? *wink*

For those who haven’t read the book, be prepared for some violence.  This movie is definitely not for young children.  It was far worse in the book with gory details of the wounded that require more than discectomy to fix them.  When the DVD comes out, I will watch it again.  Right now, my mind is still fresh from reading the books which makes me overcritical towards the movie.  Maybe the next time I see it, it will be like watching with a new pair of eyes.

County Fair 2012

This is one of the my most awaited event each year.  We went there early so we can do a lot more things before it gets too crowded.  This is me upon arriving at the the Fair Grounds.  At that very moment, I feel like a kid again.  I was excited and can’t wait to get inside.

Since we live in a partly rural area, farm animals are normally auctioned off during the Fair.  The students from the local schools took care of these animals.  I think that’s quite an educational experience for them.  I wouldn’t mind having my kids to join this activity.

Everything seems to be in their usual place so we beelined to the petting zoo.  I’m an animal lover so I was on high while feeding them.

Then, we ate a corndog from one of these food stands.  Don’t you just love how colorful they look?  I do!

We also watched the pig race which was so hilarious.  I didn’t expect them to run so fast.  Boy, they were sprinting like horses.  My favorite part was when they have to swim in this rectangular pool.  They jumped so far and swam fast.  That was probably the highlight of my evening.  Haha.

They also have some attractions roaming around like the talking robot and the scarecrow on stilts.

I wanted to try a dart game and convinced the husband to play too.  He ended up playing it all alone because my hands started shaking from pressure.  LOL.  The husband won me a Domo-kun!

Before leaving, we rode the Ferris Wheel which gave us a good view of the Fair Grounds.  I can hear screams from other rides.  The voices could drown up the sound of an ipod nano touch playing.  I’m glad I was able to talked the husband out from riding a scary ride because just like me he doesn’t like heights either.

I enjoyed this so much.  I wish our niece Abby lives nearby.  She would have enjoyed it too.  I am already looking forward to next year’s fair!

Flexing My Green Thumb

March is all over with and a lot of things has happened since.  Here’s the latest news in this year’s garden.  I have already several plants growing out there.  Remember the seedlings I started indoors during winter?  I have to throw away the bok choy and tomatoes because they were just too leggy.  I tried saving them but it was no use.  I ended up starting a new batch and also changing my techniques.  Since the Florida winter weather was warmer than usual, I put them outside during day time and take them in at night when it’s cooler.  That worked out well and now I have those second batch of seedlings as well as some cucumbers planted outside in my garden.  The peppers are taking their sweet time and are not yet big enough to be transplanted.  The second set of leaves are coming out now though so they will be out there soon.

The spinach, black seeded simpson lettuce, okra and summer squash were all directly sown.  They all have sprouted and already on their second set of leaves.  Also, the husband’s Aunt gave me some pepper and cherry tomato seedlings that she started indoors.  They are all now in the garden too.

As you can see, I have a lot of things going on.  I have been very busy.  Today, I gave them a bit of love by applying some fertilizer.  I also started a new batch of seedlings which are composed of eggplants and yardlong beans.  The heat is not that intense yet so cooling them down is still not on my priority list.  Come summer, I will have to put some sort of netting to filter out the sunlight.  Last year’s temperatures was just terrible so now I already have a plan to fix that problem.  One of these days, I will work on putting newspaper (for the weeds) and mulch.  So far, so good and I hope it continues till harvest time!
